Jørgen Roos

Jørgen Roos (1922–1998) was a Danish experimental filmmaker, photographer and documentary filmmaker, born in Gilleleje. His brother was Karl Roos, who wrote the first Danish book on film theory, Film (1936).

Although he made a number of institutional films, mainly for educational and military purposes, Jørgen Roos also devoted himself to avant-garde cinema, primarily in collaboration with his friend Albert Mertz. Together, they filmed Flugten in 1942, which marked his debut in experimental cinema. In 1948, he worked as director of photography and editor on the film They Reached the Ferry, by the acclaimed director Carl Theodor Dreyer. His relationship with Dreyer proved fruitful, and after a few further collaborations, he directed a documentary about his colleague in 1966.

In 1949, Jørgen Roos and Albert Mertz took part in the first edition of EXPRMNTL, having directed two films together.
