The festival
EXPRMNTL was a film festival organised by Jacques Ledoux and the Cinémathèque royale de Belgique from 1949 onwards. Held on five occasions in total, four of which took place at the Knokke casino, EXPRMNTL became a haven not only for avant-garde filmmakers, but also for visual artists, poets and writers, who would gather to watch innovative films and discuss the future of artistic experimentation.
This project
The aim of this website is to make the history of EXPRMNTL more accessible to the general public, who can now access historical documents, photographs, audio recordings and much more, all in one place. The project is the result of the Cinématèque royale de Belgique’s efforts to explore the possibilities of digital media and expand the ways in which we access historical collections and archives. As a long-term project, the aim is for the website to be updated with new information and digital resources as they become available. Researchers, volunteers and staff at the Cinématèque have all contributed to the platform.
